Recently, Bluetooth accessories maker iVOICE Technologies unveiled two new devices: R1 Bluetooth Handsfree Kit and Baby-ai Dual Mic Bluetooth Headset. Both devices use the latest Bluetooth Profile version (2.1) and both incorporate the companys proprietary technology for advanced noise cancellation, multi-microphone noise suppression and echo reduction.
Touted as the advanced solution for hands-free calling when in the car, the R1 Bluetooth Handsfree Kit is a portable visor speakerphone that can be paired with up to eight devices at once and supports two simultaneous Bluetooth connections through iVOICE iCONNECT 2 technology. There are two modes of work available - Isolation and MobileConference mode. While in former mode, the microphone picks up only the voice from the drivers seat and the background noise in the passenger areas is eliminated. On the other hand, in MobileConference mode, the microphone array is 360 degrees and picks up all voices in the calling environment. The R1 utilizes a 3 watt speaker and has a battery that can work for up to 30 hours in talk mode.
As for the Baby-ai Bluetooth headset, thanks to its two microphones that work in synergy, it optimizes speech intelligibility to remove background noise. The device sports what they say is a modern teardrop design, and just like the R1 can be paired with up to eight Bluetooth devices and, through iCONNECT 2 technology, can connect to two mobile phones simultaneously. The Baby-ai has a battery which provides up to six hours of talk and up to 200 hours of standby time.
Finally, both the R1 and Baby-ai feature iNTELLIGENT VOICE OPERATOR technology, which reports the Caller ID phone number, as well as Voice Guided technology, which provides user-friendly voice prompts to guide consumers when pairing with a mobile phone.
The R1 and Baby-ai are now available in a variety of colors through many e-tailers. The R1 costs $99, while Baby-ai could be yours for $79. More information is available on iVOICEs website.

Wireless Carterfone: No Free Luncheon

  • Oct. 10th, 2008 at 1:31 PM
Going to India was probably not something within my plans if not for the event. However, it somewhat changed the way I viewed certain things. Frankly, before I went over, I envisaged cockroaches and rats running around on the hotel bedroom floor, families of ants under the bed blankets, toilets jammed and faeces overflowing from the toilet bowl, brown water coming out from the taps and shower heads that gradually changes to yellow. I brought everything imaginable to “protect me” from the creepy crawlies – insect repellent, water purification pills, Dettol, shower caps, tissue paper, toilet paper… but it was quite an overkill in the end.
You see, I actually checked into a relatively ok hotel (and rather expensive too, no thanks to the organizer) and things in there are A-OK. So everything “extra” that I got were actually not really needed. I did, however, bring lesser clothes than I thought I’d need, so that will be something that I’ll note in the future.
I guess I was also lucky enough to be sent to Hyderabad where, as NTT has touted, it is the Briyani capital of India. Indeed, the Briyani is not just the usual coloured rice with chicken/mutton and gravy poured over the rice, it is a dish where the chicken/mutton is cooked with the rice – bringing the flavour right into the heart of the rice. Paratha (prata) is also different there, where spices are added to it to give it an aromatic taste. We were however, not daring enough to try their street fare for fear of food poisoning, especially when we are not accustomed to their method of preparation.
Roads there are filled with potholes, which can be quite exciting at times when you take a ride on their auto-rickshaw as the driver swerves to avoid them. It’s also interesting to see how horning is practiced consistently on their roads where in Singapore, this can potentially be thought as an anti-social act, leading to possible fights and challenges. It was also for the first time that I saw with my own eyes how people actually run after the bus and hangs perilously on the handle bars at the exit of the bus. I have also seen how they can just jump off the bus at their destination – just like how we see it on TV.
I also saw how a bungalow can be built right next to a slum – depicting the stark contrast between the very rich and the very poor. It is something that is probably not seen in modern Singapore. At one side of the road, people are driving huge cars while at the other end, people can be seen begging from drivers whose cars stopped at traffic junctions. I had been approached by an old lady while waiting for my driver to pick me up from Golconda Fort and apparently, if her begging fails to bring any sympathy dollars from me, she will rope in her granddaughter as well. They asked for Rs. 50, which can probably cover 2 street fare meals and if Alice and myself gave Rs. 50 each, that will probably cover 4. If they get at least 10 people to give them Rs. 50, then they will probably get about Rs. 500 a day and Rs. 15000 in a month. That’s twice of what a teacher earns in India. Eventually, we gave a small sum to which, the old lady probably just spat at. We were also told that no one will be allowed to starve in India, which we of course, have no idea how true it is.
Other than cars, buses, auto-rickshaws and bikes, we also saw camels, horses and cows strolling on the streets of India. The cows were the most wonderful lot, especially with the expressions on their face that were so kind… and seemed to say “Don’t eat me”. Streets in India were also filled with people… lots of people who walked the roads in a manner would warrant mountains of fines from our traffic police. If you are able to cross the roads in India, you would be able to cross almost any roads in the world.
There are many places which I didn’t get to explore because of my short stay in India. However, I have met many wonderful people who are most willing to help me out in difficult situations. To these people, I am most thankful. At the same time, I would also like to thank Su Min/ Derrick / Lenovo who most graciously loaned out the Lenovo U110, which, besides being a great notebook, has a cover whose carvings are good for caressing when I felt bored. The rubbery parts are also good for sinking my nails into, just like a cat does.
Many thanks to TDM / Howie / Creative for their Creative Vado, on which we have taken many wonderful videos (which Alice will be putting up soon). Its clever disguise was good enough for us to smuggle it into the museum without the security guard knowing. Kekeke… *tsk tsk* this is of course, a bad example and we have probably brought shame to the good name of Singapore… Then again, bringing it in was just to prove that the Creative Vado is light and well-disguised enough to be thought of as an MP3 player. For the record, we didn’t take any videos while we were in the museum. See? We respect the rules that they have laid. Actually, it’s because there are 4 CCTVs filming us at any point in time.
While our stay at Katriya De Royal had been expensive and probably way above market rate, we were glad to have met great staff at the lobby as well as friendly staff at the restaurant who served us food without letting us queue up for it. To this, we appreciate it a lot. Last but not least, we would also like to thank the ground crew of Singapore Airlines @ the Hyderabad Airport for retrieving Alice’s luggage when she checked it in with 4 small disposable cups of water that threatens to break open any time and wet all the luggage in the same bin while loaded in the plane.
There are probably many things which we have not been able to address in these blog posts, but do email us and we will try to cover it here. Till our next trip in Myanmar, we will be posting pictures soon that we hope you will enjoy.
Tata.

While the Wiimote has been able to impress and amaze millions of people out there, it has been lacking something for others. What was it lacking you ask? The capability to sense even the slightest movements. For some games, the Wiimote just wasnt precise enough in detecting how the user was moving their Wiimote. To help with this problem, Nintendo has released an add-on called MotionPlus.
MotionPlus is the solution to requests for a Wiimote that has superb motion controls. As shown in the photo below, it fits right on to the bottom of the current Wiimote and just extends the length a bit. Because its an add-on and not something that Nintendo built right-in to the existing Wiimote, users will have to determine if they want to spend the extra money on it. Unfortunately this new add-on will only work with games designed to take advantage of the technology. This means that all of the games you currently have in your library wont work with MotionPlus.

DEMOfall 2008 takes shape, I find myself making the same comments to a companies presenting their product ideas. When that happens, it's a sure bet that the themes for the conference -- and the trends for the months ahead -- are taking shape.
Carla Thompson and I spent time together this morning going over these ideas, and we agree that these five ideas, arguably all parts of a greater whole, are the trends to watch for through this year and into 2009.
The Web 2.0 Cycle Has Come to a Close. For much of the last three years, technology industry pundits have hyped Web 2.0 as the Big Thing that fundamentally changes the business of the Web. We think it's pretty clear now that Web 2.0 has been more of a hype cycle than a business cycle.

Apple may presently be free from AT

  • Jun. 15th, 2008 at 4:12 AM

Sorry if you already knew all of that. Many people still dont.
This articles premise is that with the first iPhone, ATT and Apple had a revenue-sharing deal: the phone was sold at its full retail price, without a carrier subsidy, and ATT gave Apple approximately $20 of each months subscription price. This agreement terminates with the release of the iPhone 3G.
The new iPhone 3G isnt really a $200 phone: its the same $400 phone, but with a carrier subsidy. This is why theyre requiring that the iPhone 3G be (bound to a 2-year ATT contract) in-store, right when the phone is purchased: so you cant just buy a subsidized iPhone for $200 and sell it on eBay (or unlock it) without paying for an ATT contract, therefore causing Apple to have only charged you $200 for a product that really costs $400.
This article then hypothesizes that the revenue-sharing deal with ATT was somehow tied to the 5-year exclusive-US-carrier deal, and since the revenue-sharing ended, the exclusive has probably ended as well.
I dont buy that for a second. ATT is a big phone company, and big phone companies tend to behave pretty stupidly. But I dont think ATT is that stupid.
Moreover, I dont see Apple needing to break the exclusivity deal. Theyre already free to do whatever they want in other countries, and they have. But in the US, theres only one real carrier alternative that anyone cares about: Verizon Wireless. When people say they want the iPhone on other carriers, what theyre really saying the majority of the time is that they want a Verizon version. (Sprint and T-Mobile are both so small, unsuccessful, and undesirable that it wouldnt make sense to waste time chasing their few customers.

I dont think many of us necessarily look at doctors as particularly geeky people but did you know that many of them actually carry PDA phones in their lab coats?
Frankly this is news to me. But Epocrates medical reference software offers a drug guide with free pocket PC and Palm as well as Windows Mobile software.
So now, if a physician needs to make a quick reference to a particular type of medication, they dont have to flip through pages and books to find that information.
They just pull out their handy-dandy PDA or smartphone, and there it is, the drug guide with the information they need without them having to leave the room.
This announcement was paid for by Epocrates.

Well, id Software actually went the extra mile and open sourced Quake II and Quake III after they had made their dime.
This made them famous in a very nice way.
I ought to know, since Im a beneficiary. Quake II hooked me on PC games, and I still enjoy it. Not the least of the reasons being that since its publication, there have been literally thousands of third player maps, levels, and entire multi-level games simply home-brewed and published on the Internet.
These follow Sturgeons Law precisely. But the 10% that arent crap are a huge value-add for the game.
But the original engine was designed for hardware that nobody in their right mind is going to use in 2008! To wit, the 3Dfx Voodoo II post-processor. That board was PCI. It predated the AGP interface, which is now rapidly dying out. That bloody card was longer than one of the modern cards that costs upwards of $200, have half a GB or more of onboard memory, and suck down more wattage than the CPU! It also was incapable of doing better than 640480 resolution on its best day ever.
Now, its vendor, 3Dfx, is gone. They were never able to adequately follow up, they eventually went under, and the mortal remains were sold to Nvidia.
But since the games code has been open-sourced, the community has taken it upon themselves to write new updated versions of the engine.
The one I use is KMquake, the most recent version was compiled less than a year ago, and it works better, more stably, and on much more modern hardware than ids last published version did. Its also capable of rendering in 16:10 aspect ratio on a modern flat-panel display at 19201200 resolution, which I doubt the original coders at id even dreamed about in 1997.
