My perfect little doll house

  • Oct. 12th, 2008 at 1:51 PM
I have a rather unhealthy attraction to older men on television/film. Yes, I realise I am supposed to faint at the sight of the resident 16-25 year old. But, sorry. I shall spare you any further thoughts on this matter.
However when I see the likes of Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, or Candace Bergen in- well everything- but particularly Boston Legal, and even Lisa Edelstein in House, M.D, all I can think is
"WHY aren't women over 40 paying attention? these women can dress their age and look stylish."
Hilary Clinton, despite recent improvements, could learn a thing or two. Same can be said for most politically prominent women as far as I'm concerned.
Candace Bergen in Boston Legal.

Being unemployed is turning me into a night creature. It's after 3:00am and I'm still up. I hope I find a job soon. I don't like not having a job and I hate having to watch every penny. I'm going to redo some stuff on my resume again to try to make it better. Maybe that will help.

On the good side, I got a ton of stuff done today. A friend came over early and helped me pack stuff up. We took 3 car loads over to my new place. Getting so much accomplished today makes me feel less stressed about moving. Hopefully during the week I can continue to bring little and random stuff over there and get it all set up and organized so on the big move day it will only be the furniture and few last minute items.

I have to figure out about moving the furniture. I'm going to pour over the yellow pages tomorrow and try to find movers that don't charge an arm and a leg. I don't really have that much big stuff but what I do have I am incapable of moving myself. (such are the limits of being a 90 pound weakling) I really need to keep the expenditures low. I don't think renting a uhaul is very much but then I would have to ask friends to actually move the stuff for me and I hate doing that. I'm not even sure who to ask. Maybe I'll get lucky and find pro movers that aren't too expensive. Stress, stress, worry, worry!

I also need to figure out about internet service there. My roomie has internet through the cable provider. Can I just get on his like with a network thing? Should I pay for a new phone line? I don't know what to do. More stress.

My cats are going to flip when I move them. They are both a little neurotic and nervous and I don't think they will handle it well. Of course I'm sure they will eventually get over it and adjust but I can't help but be concerned. My old cats (the pair prior to this pair) were a lot mellower than these 2 are, especially as they got older and I didn't worry as much.

I've been a bit down lately. I know it's just from not having a job and as soon as I get one I should be back to my usual springy self. it seems to be taking longer than I thought it would. But really it's only been 1 month. That's not really that long in the scheme of things. Right?

Ok, I guess I've rambled on long enough. I think I'll go forage in the kitchen for a snack.

How to make a doll house quickly

  • Apr. 21st, 2008 at 2:39 PM

Meryl Levin, describes how she made a dollhouse for her niece out of foam core board. She put graphic wrapping paper on the walls, cut clocks and pictures of out of catalogs and "framed" them with Sharpie, and her niece filled the rooms with her own toys. Not only is it almost as fun to personalize as to play with, it also stores flat, and can even travel with her to Grandma's house! If you want to try this yourself, here's how Meryl did it (use the diagram below as a reference):

1. Start with a piece of 20"x30" foam core board (a standard size at art-supply stores), and using a box cutter and a T-square or yardstick, cut 10 inches off of the longer end to make a 20"x20" square.

2. Cut the board horizontally right across the middle to create two 10"x20" rectangles.

3. Measure 10 inches across the bottom of one rectangle, and cut a notch 1/4-inch wide and 2 inches tall. At the top of the second rectangle, make a notch the same size.

4. At the bottom of both rectangles, measure 4 1/2 inches from both ends, and cut doorways 2 inches wide and 5 inches tall.

5. Slide the notches into each other to form the x-shaped house.
