West Bank Water Acme Coverage

  • Aug. 23rd, 2008 at 4:41 PM

The BBC's website and al Jazeera both had coverage this week about the water situation here in the West Bank. The village I live in is connected to the West Bank water system, and the water has been off several days each week most of the summer. We have storage tanks on the roof of the house so we don't immediately run out of water when the main line runs out, but many times the storage tanks ran dry too. Alhamdulillah we live in a house with a cistern to collect the rain water that fell on the roof during the winter, so we use that when the water is off. Last week the water went off on Tuesday, and our storage tank on the roof was empty by Wednesday night. I have dozens of bottles of drinking water stored around the house, and we use the garden hose from the cistern to bring water to wash and flush toilets. That week the water stayed off until Saturday. This week the water went off on Tuesday as usual, but I did dishes and made everyone bathe with the well water so that the storage tank on the roof didn't run out. And I always use the hose to fill up my washing machine. I am so glad I have an American style top loading machine! My friend down the street lives in an apartment building without a cistern, and it is much harder for her. When her water runs out, it is really hard, since she has 5 kids. Can you imagine not being able to flush the toilets regularly? But I know that we still have it better than all those villages that aren't even connected to a water supply, like those in the article and video below. On the other hand, in one of our neighboring villages, they are connected to the same system as the neighboring Israeli settlement, and their water is on all the time.

I used to mostly use the cistern's water for my garden and cleaning outside, but this year I have let a lot of the garden die. Last year the cistern ran dry before the summer was over, and I can't afford to have that happen again. Much as I love flowers, flushing the toilets is a higher priority.

Some in the national media seem to have written off Stoke's chances of survival before a ball has been kicked - but I wouldn't be surprised if next season's bottom three reads ... Fulham, West Brom and Hull.

I'm not Mystic Meg, so don't ask me the precise order of the relegation spots.
But I can see Stoke finishing outside the bottom three. Let's face it, even fourth-from-bottom should be considered a great success for Tony Pulis in City's first season back in the Premier League.
There's no chance of City 'doing a Derby', a possibility which has been repeatedly raised from the moment the referee blew the final whistle on their promotion clincher against Leicester City.
Derby had no fighting spirit, organisation or fitness - damning weaknesses which I just can't see surfacing at Stoke, no matter how tough life gets.
In fact, I can't see any of the promoted sides performing as badly as the Rams, who were just awful.
They didn't seem to have anything going for them, whereas this year's newcomers all have some positives.
Stoke will be tough and resilient, while Hull can take some confidence from the excellent form they showed at the end of last season.
West Brom will take heart in being touted as the best footballing side outside the Premier League, although regular readers of this column will know I'm not particularly impressed by those claims. They will do better than Derby, but I don't see why they should expect to finish higher than Stoke.
Hull did terrifically well at the end of last season... but that momentum will only carry them so far.
I would expect striker Fraizer Campbell to join them from Manchester United after his successful loan at the KC Stadium, but he and Dean Windass will find goals far harder to come by in the top flight.
Stoke will find life difficult, of course, but finishing above their fellow two promoted sides is definitely a realistic target.
The established Premier League sides will be harder to overhaul because even the expected strugglers, such as Wigan or Bolton, have valuable experience of successful survival battles.
However, I can see Fulham finally sinking having got out of trouble by the skin of their teeth last season.
Roy Hodgson pulled off a remarkable escape act, but I don't see much in that squad to prevent him having sleepless nights next year.
David Healy was superb for Northern Ireland, but couldn't score for Fulham. Meanwhile, their fellow striker and captain, Brian McBride, has gone back to the United States and will be difficult to replace.
I also feel Stoke's supporters will give them the edge over Fulham.
I saw Fulham last year when they were in trouble and I didn't get the sense their supporters were really behind them.
The ground was full, but the crowd were neither giving the team much vocal support or trying to influence the referee.
I'm sure Stoke supporters realise how difficult life will be for the team next season and, as a result, will be right behind the side looking for every decision and bounce of the ball in their favour.
The fans can only do so much, so Tony Pulis will be under no illusions he needs a better squad, but also one that is stronger - both physically and mentally than last year.
The team will have come off the pitch absolutely shattered after plenty of matches last season. But that will be the case after every single game.
The players will also have to be mentally strong enough to dig in and grind out a result even on the back of a few defeats.
The difference is hard to adjust to, which is why the sides in the Premier last year have such an advantage over the new boys.
Wigan, Bolton and Sunderland will probably be among the strugglers again this year, but will feel last season's hard-earned survival experience might just help them stay out of the bottom three.
I see Roy Keane has asked his board for around 50m to strengthen again this summer, a sum which shows the huge gap the promoted sides face before they can even contemplate being comfortable in the top flight.

Wachovia Corp. (WB) will slash its dividend and raise $7 billion in a share sale after reporting a surprising first-quarter loss on Monday of $393 million. The first-quarter loss for the Charlotte-based bank works out to 20 cents a share. That compared with profit of $2.3 billion, or $1.20 a share, a year earlier. Excluding merger-related and restructuring charges, the bank lost $270 million, or 14 cents a share. Revenue fell 4.5 percent to $7.89 billion from $8.27 billion last year. The results, tainted by exposure to credit markets, were worse than analysts anticipated. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had expected Wachovia to earn 40 cents per share on revenue of $7.98 billion. The earnings estimates typically exclude one-time items. The nation's No. 4 bank said it will cut its dividend by 41 percent to 37.5 cents per share from 64 cents per share.

Before you think of going bottom fishing on WB shares note the low FusionIQ master score of 27, which suggests shares are likely to be out of favor for a while, if not continue to move lower.
