Sticky Post

The other day I enjoyed a conversation with a local friend. We were discussing our childhoods in Itawamba County, Mississippi and how times have changed especially in the area of frugality. Both of us were raised in typical middle class homes yet our parents practiced frugality in all aspects of their lives and that frugality rubbed off on the children. It was simply a time of waste not want not and a penny saved is a penny earned type of living.

Times were drastically different growing up in the late 1950s and early 1960s around these parts. Most of our parents had survived The Great Depression and through that experience, always knew the value of a dollar and crafty ways to stretch that dollar as far as possible.

It was a time when our moms saved used aluminum foil. Called tin foil by the folks in rural northeast Mississippi, the used foil would be rinsed with water, dried, neatly folded and placed in a special drawer in the kitchen. It was a time when every glass jar was saved from the mayonnaise jar to the pickle jar those glass containers were washed and put away for future use. The brown paper sacks from the local grocery store were saved. Many of those sacks were cut, opened up, and used as coloring paper for us kids using our Crayola crayons. Kites were made from week-old newspapers and sling-shots were made from a tree branch and rubber from an old auto tire inner tube.

It was a time when kids would collect soda bottles and get paid a penny for each bottle at the local market. Redeeming 100 of those bottles would buy a jumbo bag of plastic toy soldiers at Whites Store in town providing months of entertainment and fun. Thirty-five of those redeemed bottles would buy you a Saturday afternoon matinee double feature at the New Dixie Theater complete with a soda and candy bar.

It was a time of make do with what you had and fix what was torn or broken. Patches on jeans, mended socks, and trips to Tallants Shoe Repair Shop with the painted motto on the window greeting visitors with We dont preach but we save soles were a part of everyday small-town life. Everyone in the household was taught when you leave a room, you turn off the light and doing such was just second nature.

It was a time when most everyone had a small garden even families living in town. Home canning was the norm not the exception. And natures bounty was enjoyed by all. Some of the best eating was wild muscadine jelly, blackberry jam and dried fruits from local apple and peach trees. There was nothing more sumptuous than a grandmothers warm spicy apple pie made from home-dried apples, taken from the oven and served with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Perhaps its time to return a little frugality to our daily lives. Living with that same type of waste not want not attitude that was instilled in us from a simpler era in times past would not be a bad thing in todays world.

A recent client interested in Rolfing recently asked me this question.  And its a valid question, as Rolfing does generally cost more than a normal massage (at least as long as you arent going to a d end up paying more than for a Rolfing session).
Well, several answers come to mind.  One primary difference is that Rolfing isnt really massage, and shouldnt be equated as such.  Massage therapy schools require their students to train in multiple modalitiesSwedish, deep tissue, spa-like treatments (hot stones, salt scrubs, etc).  This results in a practitioner who has some skill at a lot of different things.  As they go into practice, they may specialize in something or take classes for even more styles.
Rolfers, on the other hand, spend their ENTIRE training learning only Rolfing.  So we come out of school being really good at one thing.  And, such specialization/depth-of-training and skill level demands a premium.
Many types of massage are geared only toward relaxation.  This is a worthwhile goal in and of itself, but it doesnt get to the root of body issues or help you to learn new patterns.  Other types of massage are designed with more of a therapeutic mindset, but they tend to miss the mark.  Rolfing is not meant for relaxation, even though many people find it relaxing.  It is meant to transform your body and evolve your structure.  And its unique holistic approach sets it apart from anything learned in massage schools or naturopathic colleges.  Make no mistake about itRolfing changes your body and the mind-body connection.
And duration of the effects is probably the biggest reason why Rolfing costs more than a normal massage.  Most people, even though who love massage, admit that the relaxation or muscle relaxation usually only lasts for a couple of hours or days.  In this regard, the massage acted more like an aspirin to dull a headache.  Sometime the headache goes away on its own, and sometime you need more aspirin.
The effects of Rolfing are felt for hours, days, week, months, and even years later.  People who dont get additional work after a 10-Series can be viewed much later, and their body will have continued to improve over time.  Rolfing isnt an aspirin for the headache, its helping to resolve the headache so no aspirin is needed.
Massage can be effective, especially if the body issue is recent or temporary (like a pulled muscle).  But for deep, chronic, systemic, non-local body issues, Rolfing is the way to go.  You often would need to constantly go to a massage over and over as the effects wear off and the issue returns.  This would be penny-wise and dollar-foolish.
Im not going to say that Rolfing is cheap, but it is cost-effective and its an investment in your self.  You wont be disappointed in the return on your investment.

Putting advertising on social network websites like Facebook or News Corp (NWS) MySpace has never made sense. They claim to have tens of millions of , , . Some of those people are doing dark and deeply disturbing things online. Others are looking for a date or communicating with other agoraphobics.
The whole idea of building a social network is a bit of a fraud. The sites actually new friends for you, people like Jim Cramer and the recently deceased pin-up girl turned crazy old woman Betty Page. For a lot of the visitors who have no friends, it may actually be a useful service.
Typical Facebook user posts pictures of themselves in their underwear, their kids, their pets--especially exotic birds. The site has become a rabbit warren of the perverse, the sociopaths, and the lonely--all people who would rather communicate in a semi-anonymous online world instead of face-to-face.

Recently, Bluetooth accessories maker iVOICE Technologies unveiled two new devices: R1 Bluetooth Handsfree Kit and Baby-ai Dual Mic Bluetooth Headset. Both devices use the latest Bluetooth Profile version (2.1) and both incorporate the companys proprietary technology for advanced noise cancellation, multi-microphone noise suppression and echo reduction.
Touted as the advanced solution for hands-free calling when in the car, the R1 Bluetooth Handsfree Kit is a portable visor speakerphone that can be paired with up to eight devices at once and supports two simultaneous Bluetooth connections through iVOICE iCONNECT 2 technology. There are two modes of work available - Isolation and MobileConference mode. While in former mode, the microphone picks up only the voice from the drivers seat and the background noise in the passenger areas is eliminated. On the other hand, in MobileConference mode, the microphone array is 360 degrees and picks up all voices in the calling environment. The R1 utilizes a 3 watt speaker and has a battery that can work for up to 30 hours in talk mode.
As for the Baby-ai Bluetooth headset, thanks to its two microphones that work in synergy, it optimizes speech intelligibility to remove background noise. The device sports what they say is a modern teardrop design, and just like the R1 can be paired with up to eight Bluetooth devices and, through iCONNECT 2 technology, can connect to two mobile phones simultaneously. The Baby-ai has a battery which provides up to six hours of talk and up to 200 hours of standby time.
Finally, both the R1 and Baby-ai feature iNTELLIGENT VOICE OPERATOR technology, which reports the Caller ID phone number, as well as Voice Guided technology, which provides user-friendly voice prompts to guide consumers when pairing with a mobile phone.
The R1 and Baby-ai are now available in a variety of colors through many e-tailers. The R1 costs $99, while Baby-ai could be yours for $79. More information is available on iVOICEs website.

A new report just out on tuna states that all populations worldwide are in great danger of extinction.  A new effort to slow down the fishing of this great fish in the Atlantic has just been blocked.  Quite simply put, these fish are worth more on the plate than they are in the oceans with laws to protect them for future generations.  In Japan a bluefin tuna, which can grow to a whopping 14 feet and 1800 pounds can command up to $60,000 each!
Another sad fact is that tuna now is full of mercury making it unsafe to have in large quantities or with any frequency.  Pregnant women are strongly advised to stay away from this fish.  It is also well known that the methods of catching tuna are also diminishing the populations of other sea wildlife such as dolphins and sea birds.  As critically endangered fish, we will probably see their extinction in our lifetime.
The best way to fight this downward spiral is to boycott tuna altogether.  Stop buying canned, fresh, or frozen tuna - all types.  According to the list bluefin, albacore, skipjack, yellowfin, and bigeye are all in danger.  I believe that about covers all we eat in this family.  Please do your homework.  Read:  http://www.advocacy.britannica.com/blog/advocacy/wp-content/uploads/bluefin-tuna-mam
Also, please read: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthcomment/charlesclover/3531575/Bluefin-tunamagnificent-fish-too-valuable-to-save.html
Tuna are predators that eat small schooling fish, crabs, and squid.  Snorkeling in Hawaii is something that can become very addicting, but also very educational.  You may see small tuna in the reefs doing a fair share of people watching.  Im ready when you are.

Dear Diary,

Well I got one of my most prized possessions- A music box. You're probably wondering, how I got a music box? Well first I want to take you back to Thanksgiving Day.

I found Franklin, who was collecting Knife and fork sets that the mayor passed out to me (for deliveries to neighbors) and I ended up with 2 Harvest Rugs, a harvest tv, a harvest table and a harvest chair. I sold the tv, table, chair and one of the rugs to Nook for cash but I kept one and it's a permeant fixture in my house.

As the days have passed, I have been selling fruit from fruit trees I've planted and I'm down to 95,137 bells for my loan. I haven't taken any loans for my friends this time. About 2 days ago, a little kitten named Katie wandered into my town. I noticed her crying by the beach.

I went to talk to her and she told me that she had walked off from her mom and got lost. Her mom lives in Kashyyk (my friend Chris's town). At first, I didn't believe her. How could I get her back to Kashyyk if Chris's gate wasn't open. I figured she would only be there for 1 day and then she'd be gone. But she wasn't! She was near Nook N Go the next day. Still crying that her mom was in Kashyyk and she needed me to take her home. Luckily for me, Chris had his gate open. I lead the girl to my gate, and we both walked through it.

When we arrived in Kashyyk, Katie's mom was there by the gate. She thanked me deeply for bringing her little girl home and scolded the girl for wandering off. I felt like I did a good deed for the family and went about my visit. Eventually I went home and went to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, I had some mail. 3 letters, 2 with a present. My 1st letter was from Rhonda (neighbor in my town) she was talking about some Lemon Tea she had for lunch. The 2nd was from the ABD (bank) sending me a replacement shopping card. The 3rd was from Katie, thanking me for bringing her home. When I opened the gift wrapped present, it was a red music box with golden letters written on the top. And when you open it, it plays the Animal Crossing theme song very softly in an instrumental way.

I love it so much I put it on display within my house. I own a fair part of the Regal collection. The clock, table, bed, dresser and wallpaper. The only other object on the table was my lamp. I put the music box right next to the lamp and opened it. I love the tune, it helps me sleep at night sometimes. I guess it's my most prized possession! Everything else in my house (my regal collection) is important to me but I would sell that in a minute if necessary. This music box is something I'd never sell (not just because I can't order another)but because it's something I earned. One of my friends who came into my town offered to buy the music box for 13,000 bells (a hefty amount) and I told them no. Another offered 30,000 bells for it (would have paid off a huge chunk of my loan) but again I said no.

This isn't something that can be bought. I don't love it for the beauty or the music, I love it because someone I helped thought about me and gave it to me. How am I suppose to know if it was hers? Maybe it was a family heirloom and I won't sell it!

As for my town, I haven't gained or lost any neighbors. I guess that can be seen as a good thing. I have however got my Nook's Cranny upgraded to a Nook 'N' Go which offers a few more items that Nook's cranny did. My brother, Xav, finally paid off his first loan of 19,800 bells and decided that he's not going to pay off this next loan (he only owns 5 pieces of furniture and he's not looking for any more room).

We dont tend to get quite as much MediaFLO-related news in to the office here at IntoMobile, so when we do see something, its nice to make mention of it:
MediaFLO is hoping to dramatically increase its coverage next year — adding more than 40 cities to its footprint — after the Feb. 17 switchover to all-digital broadcasts by full-power TV stations. Today, it provides live, mobile multichannel services through ATT and Verizon Wireless in 58 markets. Two to three months after the DTV transition, MediaFLO should have commercial service up and running in Boston, Houston, San Francisco and Miami, which are the four markets out of the top 20 where the service is currently unavailable, according to Matt Milne, senior vice president of strategy.

The current service with ATT and Verizon has (apparently) well over 100K subs, and offers a mixture of full-length simulcast, plus linear channels. With a daily watch average of over 20 mins, its interesting to see that Live TV can provide (i.e. short) content too - not something I would have initially thought could be the case, as compared with on-demand 3G streaming.
Unsurprisingly perhaps, news and sports are the most popular, and I guess if you want breaking news or scores, then live has got to be the way to go
What will be fascinating is how the providers and MediaFLO grows the channel line-up. Within available bandwidth, there are supposed to be 22 channels provided for, of which only 15 (including some temporary channels) are being used. Id go sport.etc!
The only fly in the ointment, so to speak, could be the US broadcasters that are pushing along with a plan to do FTA mobile TV. Analogous with DVB-T in Germany (which utilises the existing terrestrial service), this solution utilises the existing US terrestrial standard of ATSC - so expect to see (another) prominent broadcast Mobile TV standard, plus some custom handsets goodness!

Laughable Joke - Redneck Jokes 401-500

  • Dec. 6th, 2008 at 12:43 PM
Their mission statements are very clear. Those organizations fighting to achieve a stable population level for their respective countries do not want to muddy the waters with concerns that would decoy attention from the major task at hand: containing and reducing the numbers of consumers in their societies. The ethnic, cultural or religious composition of those numbers is immaterial to their environmental impact. Thats the party line, and it is defended and believed with conviction, against the determined efforts of open-borders critics and human rights activists to impute racism and bury the movement in disgrace.
When confronted by a reporter who asked if he was campaigning for the population stabilization of California because he didnt like Mexicans the driving force behind its growth Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society responded that he didnt care if 100% of California was Mexican, as it once was. Only that there would be fewer Californians.
Roy Beck of NumbersUSA said something quite similar: To talk about changing immigration numbers is to say nothing against the individual immigrants in this country. Rather, it is about deciding how many foreign citizens living in their own countries right now should be allowed to immigrate in the future.
SUSPS, a faction of the Sierra Club that promotes population stability for the United States by reduced immigration and low fertility, says in its statement No to Racism, Yes to Environmentalism, that it repudiates the support of xenophobes and racists and compares human diversity to the value of diversity found in animal and plant species. We support U. S. population stabilization purely for ecological reasons. This requires we reduce both birth rates and migration to the U. S. to sustainable levels.
Andy Kerr of the now defunct Alternatives to Growth Oregon, articulated the same sentiment. To those who oppose immigration because of racist and/or xenophobic reasons, I say to you, Go To Hell. The issue is immigration, not immigrants. I came to my support of immigration reform from an ecological carrying capacity perspective. Be it a house, a block, a city, a waterfront, a state, a bioregion, a nation, a continent, or a planetall have a carrying capacity.
The Carrying Capacity Network echoes Kerrs sentiments. CCN is anti-mass immigration but not anti-immigrantour battle is being waged for the future of the USA, for preservation of quality of life, respect for law, national security and a sustainable size and level of resource use. They add that they were the founding sponsor of the Diversity Coalition for Immigration Moratorium because they are working as much for the benefit of immigrants as native-born Americans.
Optimum Population Trust of the United Kingdom puts the matter of vs. origin of people in a more clinical language. The OPT believes the UK is overpopulated and that its population should be allowed to stabilize to a sustainable level. The ecological issue is one of population numbers, and of resource demand and environmental impacts created by different sizes of population at given rates of affluence and technology, issues of race or religion therefore, are not relevant.
Sustainable Population Australia meanwhile, simply aims to advocate low immigration rates while rejecting any selection based on race.
So the ecological verdict is in. Numbers matter. Nothing else does. It doesnt matter if 450 million Americans will be singing the Star Spangled Banner in Spanish in fifty years. Only that the country cant sustain 50% more people than it currently has, regardless of the language they speak. It is not imperative that an Anglo-European civilization survive in North America, Australia or the UK. It is more urgent that a civilization of any kind survive this century, which many, like James Lovelock, say it wont. The cultural disintegration of Anglo-European nations and their colonization by third world migrants does not gain a ranking on the endangered species list of any environmentalist. It is my contention that it should. With all due respect I think the population stabilization movement has got it wrong. Culture and value systems do matter in the numbers game. How so?
Check out fertility rates, something those in the movement love to focus on because they can avoid the nasty word, immigration. It seemed that as long as the Sierra Club could concentrate on telling white people not to have babies they were quite on board with population control. Every liberal is a champion of reproductive freedom. But when it became clear that it would have to mean telling people of colour not to come to America they got cold feet and dropped immigration from their policy book. David Gelbaums $100 million bribe persuaded them to keep it out. Other organizations are more comfortable with discussing fertility too, despite the fact that it accounts for about a third of population growth in North America and Britain, and half in Australia.
A briefing paper prepared by Migration Watch UK used census data to reveal that while the fertility rate for the UK-born population as a whole was 1.8, it was 4.8 for mothers born in Pakistan. In 2001, British women had 1.6 children while Pakistan-born women had 4.7. Bangladeshi women in Birmingham, to cite one city, and another country of origin, had a total fertility rate of 5.3 in 1991 and 3.9 in 2001. The Indian fertility rate was much lower at 2.3 but still higher than the national average. Then the paper makes an interesting observation. The fact that Black communities have seen their fertility rate fall toward British norms reflects the settled nature of these communities. In other words, as this assertion would imply, they have become somewhat assimilated.
A comparable statement was made by Statistics Canada. Noting that in 2006 36% of all children born in Ontario were born to immigrants, Statscan gave us the assurance that studies have shown that immigrants have higher fertility rates compared with Canadian-born women, but these rates decline to Canadian levels with the second generation. Again, the magic of assimilation.
But what if the newcomers are non-assimilable? What if there are too many, too fast, for integration? The British governments Community Cohesion Panel was quoted by Migration Watch as reporting in July of 2004 that there are other concerns about the speed at which the newcomers can be accommodatedthe pace of change is simply too great in some areas at present.
The same concerns can be heard in Toronto where 44% are foreign-born, Vancouver where 38% are foreign-born and other cities with large and assertive immigrant communities. Many Canadians would maintain that Canada is suffering from ethnic indigestion.
In America the new wave of immigration is fast transforming the nation. There are now more Asians in Chicago than in Honolulu and more Hispanics in Washington than El Paso. In more than six major cities the Hispanic population doubled in the last 7 years and it grew by 22% in small counties, seven times the growth rate of those areas. In 2000 non-Hispanic whites were a minority in 29 counties of more than 500,000 residents. Seven years later, they are a minority in 36 counties of that size. Ethnic minorities now form a majority in one-third of the most populated counties in the United States. And with immigration at a runaway rate of two million a year plus illegal immigrant flow, that proportion will continue to grow. Anglo-European culture in America is against the wall.
Two things are material about this trend. Mass immigration, legal or illegal, is bad news for the environment. The pressure on habitat, farmland and wetlands is manifest, so that ironically, the cultural diversity that migrants bring with them and to which environmental NGOs pay homage is delivered at the cost of our biological diversity. Moreover, each newcomer, according to the calculations of Albert Bartlett of the University of Colorado, will dump 23.8 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere annually.
Particularly damaging are Americans, or aspiring Americans, who come from Mexico and apparently have more children while living in America than women who live in Mexico. The Hispanic fertility rate is 40% higher than non-Hispanics and Hispanic single women have the highest fertility rate of any group. The total fertility rate for Hispanics is 2.9 as compared to 1.8 for non-Hispanic whites, and 2.1 for the general population. Is their rate declining according to the classic pattern of integration to the host culture?
Not according to a January 2001 report in the Chicago Tribune by Sue Ellen Christian and Teresa Puente. While the number of births to African-American and white teenagers fell in Illinois from 1997 to 1999, the number of births to Hispanic teens increased. In fact, Hispanic girls lead the nation in the teen birthrate, with about 93 births per 1,000 Hispanic teens per year compared to the overall national teen birthrate of about 50 births per 1000.Newer immigrants are more likely to avoid pregnancy than second or third generation Hispanics. (cf. Steve Sailer, Assimilation, VDARE.com)
Young Hispanics, so it would seem, are not becoming Americanized. But this cannot be surprising. As the census shows, they are not actually living in America, but in Mexican colonies. This may not be of much alarm to Paul Watson, or to those with an environmental focus, but it should be. Failure to assimilate, a function of too many outside the core Anglo-European value group coming in too quickly, translates into a higher birthrate. That drives a third of our environmentally ruinous population growth. What then of the other two-thirds, immigration? Can it be that the multicultural character of immigration affects not only fertility rates but the volume of immigration itself, and hence, the environmental damage?
The Canadian example is instructive. Multiculturalism is not only a social fact but the state ideology and code language for mass immigration itself. Four decades ago Canada was described as Two Solitudes, English and French. Mass immigration drawn from sources as mandated from a policy shift in the mid 60s has created a nation of twenty solitudes whose affinity with the host country is questionable. Their numbers grow every year and political parties compete in a bidding war for their votes. This has built up powerful lobbies for even higher levels of immigration leading to a vicious cycle, a veritable cyclone that has led Canada to the highest population growth rate in the G8 and the highest per capita immigrant intake in the world. As a consequence, the country has lost about 20% of its best farmland to subdivisions and 70% of its endangered wildlife lies within striking distance of more development.
Cultural fragmentation then, has become a force behind immigration, and therefore environmental destruction. And this is exactly how Garrett Hardin saw the danger of a multicultural nation. Each lobbies government to open the doors so that can grow its membership. An ethnically and culturally homogeneous society, on the other hand, Hardin argued, could better reach a consensus on how to deal with a contentious issue. Jared Diamond made a similar point. Japan, facing post-war starvation with a population beyond its carrying capacity, was able to cut its birth-rate because there were no competing ethnic blocs fearful of losing demographic political weight. In Canada the francophone of Quebec is pursuing pro-natalist policies of birth incentives driven in part, subconsciously at least, by that old fear of being swamped in an Anglophone sea.
There remains but one more nail to be driven into the coffin of multiculturalism over which so many in the environmental movement would mourn. That is the terribly awkward fact that those wonderful uninvited cultures that have colonized our cities do not harbour an environmentalist ethic.
It was the late Stephen Jay Gould who said that cant fight for something you dont love. A look at the roster of conservation and environmental organizations will confirm that it is substantially those of Northern European ancestry who love nature. This stands to reason as the conservation movement finds its roots in early nineteenth century Northern European romanticism. According to Steve Sailer only 7% of the Sierra Clubs 550,000 members are minorities of any kind, though minorities account for 28% of the US population. Those who frequent the trails of the Canadian rockies or Coast Mountains will typically encounter hikers with German, British, Dutch, Scandinavian or North American accents, while in Banff Alberta, the Japanese keep to the paved walkways. Leave them to go into the forest and youd think you were in Bavaria for the Germans you would meet. There were 500 members in our Vancouver Natural History Society. It seemed half had come from the UK, one came from Southern Europe and none from Asia in a city with an Asian population of 25%.
By contrast, only 1% of visitors to Yellowstone national park are Hispanics, even though they comprise 10% of the general population. Sailer believes that during a recession Hispanic blue collar workers, unlike the British working class émigrés like my grandfather who relished on the moors, would favour relaxing Californias environmental restrictions. What is worrisome is that the demographic shift away from the European core will undercut support for the national parks system when it becomes increasingly under siege in coming decades from the developmental pressures from immigrant-driven growth.
Looking to a future where the Hispanic population will grow from 52 to 190 million by centurys end in a country of an unsustainable 570 million, one might ask, are there any John Muirs in Hispanic America? Will futile outreach efforts to ethnic minorities and environmentally unfriendly cultures by the Sierra Club and other such timid, growth-colloborationist organizations bear any fruit? Steve Sailer offers some qualified hope:
If immigrants tended to come from cultures that shared a green-orientation with us, like Germany or if they tended to be well-educated like the typical Sierra Club member, theyd pose less of a threat to the environment. However, most immigrants today tend to be poorly educated, and originating in societies that put little emphasis on conservation
Now, its likely that upper-middle class environmentalist views could be inculcated into todays Hispanic-Americans over the next couple of generations. But the process depends on their being economically and culturally assimilated into todays upper middle class. However, few will manage that trick if they continue to be engulfed by millions of additional Hispanic immigrants, driving down their wages, and surrounding them with environmentally lax Latin American cultural norms. The best way to kick-start this assimilation process is an immigration pause. (VDARE, The Green Gag)
The sad politically incorrect fact is, for anyone concerned about population stabilization, culture does matter. The fragmentation, colonization and disintegration of a once dominant culture from which key conservationist values have been drawn cannot surely be a matter of indifference to environmentalists. Numbers of course are of paramount concern, but where people come from is as important as how many people come, if so many come that time is not allowed for their assimilation.
Assimilation, a dirty word in Canadian political lexicography, holds the key to lowering second-generation fertility rates, to breaking with identity politics and tribal loyalties, and to the absorption from the core culture of a conservationist ethic. Multiculturalism is an ideological riposte to the need for this essential process.
Multiculturalism is bad for the environment.

(Moderator's Note: I learned a lot during this playtest, and made a few changes. Cloaking ships are not limited to how many turns they can be cloaked, but they are limited to being cloaked for ten consecutive turns. That satisfies the power consumption requirement of the cloak, as well as keeping ships from cloaking and staying that way to annoy others. One point is required each turn to remain cloaked. Only 'Experienced' rated and above can 'flash detect' a cloaked ship. I actually thought about getting rid of that ability altogether, but everyone knows how a cloak works, and should therefore be capable of countering its effect. I'm assuming that you could flood a close area with tachyons and detect a cloaked ship. Plasmas require a single point to maintain their charge if they are held in a fully charged position. The plasma is a fantastic weapon, but it also needs to be expensive to operate if game balance is to be maintained. The 'speed' notation in orbital combat doesn't work at the moment. Honestly, I had an interesting enough time accurately tracking the position of the two dancing ships without grasping the nuances of adjusting speeds. The 'orbital position' system is absolutely vital to tracking the position of ships in orbit once they change target selection to a ship. The five 'experience points' an 'Experienced' rated ship is allowed per engagement needs to be well-defined, but could be a game winner if used properly. I was a bit concerned about that as a balance issue as well, but if it is properly defined, it would help to highlight the value of taking on and completing missions, and properly reward hard working crews. It looks like I'm going to rewrite the heavy combat rules about a hundred times before I get it right, but that's how you get a good rulebook and a working game. At the same time, you notice, if you look at these notations included here, a bobble or two. For instance, towards the end, the warbird (cloaked at the time) breaks orbit enough to turn around and drop in alongside the Guadalcanal. It was my intention to have the Praex decloak and unload with a plasma torpedo at close, killing range. So what I did was actually steer the ship around and have it drop forward momentum to allow the Guadalcanal to catch up and pull up alongside. That was when the Guadalcanal came up with the roll it needed to flash detect the Romulan and lob a photon at an absolutely deadly range. Now, you might say, well, you knew the Romulan ship was there. I did, obviously, having put it there. But I couldn't do anything without A) flying blind (which I didn't want to) or B) Flash detecting (which I needed the roll of 11 (10 to detect plus one to fire the photon). Think of it as solitaire with starships.

This essay against a proposed Dallas Convention Center hotel by longtime Dallas journalist Carolyn Barta. Calling the political establishment-backed project "madness," Ms. Barta writes, "This rush by the city to dump vast amounts of money into a convention center hotel would be questionable in the best of times. In the worst of times, it seems downright foolhardy."
• And now a moment of personal privilege: While on vacation last week, I not only celebrated my favorite holiday of the year but my 5th anniversary as a Dallas City Hall reporter. My first story? Coverage of an ultimately doomed effort by preachers in Dallas' southern sector to recall then-Mayor Laura Miller. Ted Benavides served as city manager and Terrell Bolton as police chief. And of the 15 Dallas City Council members in office today, only three -- Mayor Pro Tem Elba Garcia, District 6 council member Steve Salazar and District 13 council member Mitchell Rasansky -- were around then. Certainly, a lot has changed. But without question, covering Dallas City Hall, and the myriad issues inside of it and out, is as rewarding a job as ever.

I do not have enough words to express my thanks to you and your fine Tablers whom I had the pleasure to meet during my visit to Area 1 from 21st to 25th November 08.
My appreciation to AC Tr. Deepu who organised these unscheduled lunch and dinner meetings with all of you and in a matter of 4 days, I had the pleasure of reaching out to 10 Tables of Kerala in Area 1. Although the thought of travelling by road to each centre was putting me off, the silver lining in the cloud was the company of AC Tr. Deepu and an opportunity to make new friends for life in s own Country. And friends I did make. have enough memories of a life time of my visit to Area 1. Every bit of this trip is clearly etched in my mind. Now that I have tasted the hospitality of Area 1, I would love to visit the rest of the Tables during the month of January 09.

Dim Luminary in Dallas - Commonwealth

  • Dec. 4th, 2008 at 7:52 AM
I've watched hockey a loong time. I was one of those people who'd get excigted hearing the 'Hockey Night in Canada' theme song start up, in anticipation of a good game. I grew up in a town with a 'dynasty' team, who had a good run of Stanley Cup winning years. But as I grew into my feminism, I also became increasingly aware of just how fucked up the professional world of sports is - including hockey. Media would report on the 'dark' side of junior hockey (the road to the NHL, for many North American players), particularly the sensational, but undeniably sexually-themed hazing rituals, the sexual abuse of players by trusted members of coaching staff, and - recently - a court case involving allegations of forced 'group sex' between players and their girlfriends at the hands of a coach. In professional hockey, we know that the funding and optics of women's versus men's leagues are seriously skewed, with the greatest salaries, the rampant advertising, and professional respect reserved for the NHL. As in many other sports, a few 'exceptional' women have broken through the wall of testosterone to garner some acclaim, like Hayley Wickenheiser. As a younger woman, I was pretty excited to see Manon Rheaume was signed as a free agent to the Tampa Bay Lightening, and got the go-ahead to play goal them. Then I realized how it was: she would start in goal for an exhibition game, which had no competitive value, and was pulled early for no apparent reason. The coach later acknowledged it was pretty much a publicity stunt for the expansion team, and reports focused on that angle, as much as for her good looks.
Last night, though, something interesting happened that absolutely stunned me. Dallas Star player, the widely disliked bad boy Sean Avery, was suspended by the league for uttering disparaging remarks about former girlfriends, Rachel Hunter and Elisha Cuthbert (who are now dating other NHL hockey players). Long story short, he ensured all media cameras were on, then called the women his sloppy seconds. Which is a jaw-droppingly bonehead manouvre to begin with. But what really stunned me was the league's willingness to indefinitely suspend Avery for these comments, and THEN for the coach of his team to publicly support the censure, stating that, if the NHL hadn't of done it, he would have.
Clearly, there are other incidents that have led up to this moment - Avery has been known as a pot-stirrer in many ways, engaging in a lot of 'unsportsmanlike' behaviour on ice, on the bench and, obviously, away from the rink. As I said to my partner last night, this was just the last straw in a series of ill-will engendering actions. Now, he may have provided team management with a reason to get rid of a controversial, yet increasingly unpopular player. But, what the hell, NHL? You surprised me.

Blue Gold (of Buffalo): The Seat in Dallas

  • Dec. 4th, 2008 at 7:23 AM
I understand that Boston has a decent team this year, and that not every game can be won, but after three straight bad losses, something is just fundementally wrong with this team. After losing to the Bruins 7-4 the team has now allowed 18 goals against in their past three games for an average of six goals against per game. There is no way to win like that. In fact Buffalo has lost five of their last six games, allowing an average of 4.7 goals against per game.

When you score four goals in the first period you should not lose, especially if you have a two goal lead. Even as Boston caught up, Buffalo should have been able to continue to take advantage of the Bruin's mistakes, but instead they just gave up. As soon as Boston was up 5-4 most of the Sabres stopped skating hard despite there still being half of a game left to play.

Mair and Peters both hurt the team by taking some bad penalties. Over the last weekend they were two of our best guys, but now they are even hurting us. The refs really were trying to hurt the team as they called a number of rediculous trips that never should have been penalties. Also there was the diving call on Gaustad. Paul Gaustad does not take dives. He simply does not. If it was Roy I'd give it the benefit of the doubt, but to call that a dive on Gaustad is just insane.

Miller looked really bad this game, and finished the first period with a .571 save percentage. Lalime on the other hand looked good, alowing nothing past him in over 18 minutes of play. He should have gotten in the game much sooner, as some of the goals that Miller had allowed against in this game were really bad, and completly his fault.

The Hecht, Pominville Vanek line actually played well in this game and finished with a combined for three goals, four assists, and a plus two rating. Rivet also had a good game plus two with an assist for a team that was all around bad. One line can not carry a team though, and the others need to play hard as well.

Chara had a good game for Boston, putting in two powerplay goals from the blueline. The Sabres should know better than to let his blasts get through. Marc Savard also had a good game getting four assists, including both of Chara's goals and getting himself a goal as well.
